COORDINATOR
Marisa Gariglio
FULL PROFESSOR in MICROBIOLOGY and CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
Marisa Gariglio, MD, PhD, serves as the Full Professor in Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology and leads the Laboratory of Molecular Virology at the Department of Translational Medicine, University of Eastern Piedmont, Novara, Italy. She earned her Biology degree in 1984 and her Medical degree in 1990, both from the University of Turin, Italy, where she also completed her Ph.D. in Immunology and Virology. Following her post-doctoral training at the Department of Molecular Biology "Hoffmann La Roche" in Basel, Switzerland, she joined the University of Eastern Piedmont in 1996.
Her laboratory focuses on the pathogenesis, molecular genetics, and biochemistry of human papillomaviruses (HPV) and polyomaviruses (HPyV). A significant area of her research has been understanding the interactions between betaHPV and epithelial keratinocytes in patient lesions, such as skin cancer in immunosuppressed patients, and in an HPV8 transgenic immunosuppressed mouse model. Her current research interests include studying the interplay between innate immunity and viruses, particularly the potential anticancer properties of RIG-I targeting, and investigating the role of the cellular deacetylase SIRT1 in HPV-driven carcinogenesis, exploring the inhibition of SIRT1 activity as a potential strategy against this type of cancer.
