Brief Research Description
The lines of research are aimed at analyzing the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying aging-related diseases. The fields of interest are broad and range from advanced-maternal-age pregnancy to acute/chronic kidney diseases, to neurodegenerative/cardiovascular diseases, to eye diseases. The focus of interest is not only related to increasing the knowledge about the physiopathology, with particular attention to aspects related to the redox balance, but also to the identification of early markers of damage that may have diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic value. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are good candidates for the above issues. In addition to being easily isolated and characterizable, EVs act as a means of communication between cell and cell. In this way they can not only transport genetic or other materials but can also represent a drug delivery system. In our research, those objectives are achieved through quantifications of oxidants/antioxidants in biologic fluids and in vitro experiments on various cell lines.
