TEACHING

Curricula

The Ph.D. Program in Medical Sciences and Biotechnology offers two distinct curricula, each focusing on specific thematic clusters: Autoimmune and Allergic Diseases and Neoplastic, Metabolic, and Age-Related Diseases. It is important to note that students initially apply for the Ph.D. Program in Medical Sciences and Biotechnology as a whole, rather than for a specific curriculum. The selection of curricula and particular research projects typically occurs during the first year of the Program.

Autoimmune and allergic diseases

Research in this area primarily takes place at the Center for Translational Research in Autoimmune and Allergic Disease (CAAD, https://caad.uniupo.it), which is situated at Corso Trieste 15, Novara. The center is a fifteen-minute walk from the Medical School. CAAD is equipped with a range of high-throughput technologies, including proteomics, metabolomics, next-generation sequencing, high-quality imaging, and flow cytometry. This research platform is aimed at devising novel intervention strategies against autoimmune and allergic diseases. This involves developing diagnostic and prognostic approaches that will enhance the categorization of diseases, thereby improving therapeutic targeting.

Neoplastic, metabolic, and age-related diseases

This curriculum includes a series of ongoing research projects at the Medical School in Novara that covers different aspects of these diseases, especially in the elderly population, under the auspices of the Department of Excellence in Aging Science. The research emphasizes interdisciplinary methods to investigate the molecular basis of disease, equipping students with a fundamental understanding of the biochemical and genetic principles essential to understanding key pathophysiological processes. In this Program, students will investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for cellular abnormalities in clinical disorders, applying key principles learned from their coursework directly to medical research.
